Austin O’Brien is an Irish jazz singer, songwriter and performer whose deep voice, emotional delivery and commanding stage presence have made him a recognizable figure in the contemporary international jazz scene. Born in Dublin, Ireland on August 25, 1966, he grew up immersed in music from a young age, influenced early on by his father, who was also a singer.

O’Brien’s passion for music began in his youth, singing in school and absorbing a wide range of styles. Though he initially studied marketing and advertising at university and worked outside of music, the call of the stage proved irresistible. He dedicated himself fully to performance, bringing his unique voice and energy to audiences across Europe.

Settling in France, particularly in the Hautes-Pyrénées region, O’Brien found a new creative home and quickly integrated into the local jazz community. He has remarked that he never felt like a stranger in France, praising the honesty and directness of the people there.

These sessions were overseen by Maureen Sickler (recording engineer) and benefited from the musical advice of Don Sickler.

These recordings, fully mixed, mastered and fully owned by the artist, reflect Austin’s mature artistic voice and his dedication to a timeless yet personal jazz aesthetic. A fourth album is currently in production at the same studio with New York–based musicians.

In addition to his musical work, O’Brien has been building a strong visual identity for his recordings with planned video content shot in the Van Gelder Studio, New York City and Paris — a strategic element that supports international press and promotional campaigns.

Among the emblematic venues that shaped his journey stands the legendary Caveau de la Huchette in Paris. Performing in this historic Latin Quarter club — active since 1946 and considered a rite of passage for jazz musicians — allowed Austin to forge a direct and incandescent connection with Parisian audiences. Within its vaulted cellar steeped in history, his storytelling style, refined swing phrasing, and natural elegance resonate with rare authenticity.

He also left a lasting impression at Jazz in Marciac, one of Europe’s most prestigious jazz festivals. Marciac represents consecration — a stage where the world’s great jazz figures perform before an audience of deep musical culture. Appearing there reinforced Austin’s positioning as an international artist equally capable of captivating intimate club settings and commanding major festival stages. Across southwestern France, he notably performed 20 dates linked to the festival — a breakthrough year in his trajectory.

The most defining encounter was with pianist Christophe Barennes. Their collaboration evolved into both a powerful musical partnership and a lasting friendship. Between 2024 and 2025, Austin O’Brien undertook an ambitious recording project at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, USA — a studio synonymous with masterpieces by John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, and Wayne Shorter.

Working with sound engineer Maureen Sickler, heir to the studio’s historic sonic legacy, and guided by producer and arranger Don Sickler, Austin recorded three albums that define a deeply personal aesthetic: elegant, narrative-driven, rich, and luminous. Fully mixed, mastered, and entirely owned by the artist, these works represent both a strong artistic foundation and a strategic asset for international development.

A fourth album, currently in production at the same studio, marks a new step forward. Surrounded by New York musicians and engaged in discussions with internationally renowned artists, Austin is expanding his sonic universe and preparing a project with unmistakably global ambition.
